During the Overtime segment of Real Time, Bill Maher read off a viewer question about his guest Robert Reich‘s feud with Bill O’Reilly. O’Reilly had called Reich a communist in jest on his show last year, and Reich brought it up in a recent New York Times op-ed, which led O’Reilly to keep piling on him, culminating in Reich challenging O’Reilly to a formal debate. But O’Reilly hasn’t accepted, and Maher knew the reason why.
Reich said, “Do I care what Bill O’Reilly thinks of me? No!”
That being said, if O’Reilly’s going to publicly disagree with him, Reich said it should at least be borne of “civil debate instead of name-calling.”
Maher thought it was smart of O’Reilly to avoid Reich’s debate invitation. He said, “Wise, on his part, ’cause you would eat his lunch.”
