Manhunt Underway After Illinois Police Officer Shot and Killed (UPDATED)

Authorities in Fox Lake, Illinois are searching for two male suspects — one black, one white — along with a possible female accomplice, after a police officer there was shot and killed Tuesday morning. The unnamed cop’s gun and pepper spray were reportedly taken off his person during the incident, which started as a traffic stop. Local schools have been placed on lockdown while police search for the assailants.

The shooting comes just three days after a sheriff’s deputy in Houston, Texas was fatally shot in the back while pumping gas.

UPDATE — 1:30 p.m. ET: The officer who was shot has been confirmed dead by the authorities. The manhunt for the suspects is still underway, with helicopters and canine units having been called in. The shooting occurred near Highway Route 12, but it is unknown whether the suspects are in a vehicle or on foot, or if there are any leads on their location. The local lockdown is still in effect.

UPDATE — 1:45 p.m. ET: Authorities have reported that the suspects took the officer’s gun, pepper spray, and other gear after shooting him.
