On MSNBC’s Morning Joe Monday, Bloomberg‘s Mark Halperin said the indictment of Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is “the stupidest thing” he’s seen covering politics.
Perry was indicted Saturday for “abusing the powers of his office by carrying out a threat to veto funding for state prosecutors investigating public corruption,” according to the Associated Press.
The governor has reportedly been under investigation for month after he publicly vowed to veto $7.5 million for Travis County District Rosemary Lehmberg’s public integrity unit. Perry threatened the veto after Lehmberg was arrested for drunk driving in 2013. Perry defended the veto and claimed innocence of any illegal activity in a press conference.
“This is the stupidest thing I’ve seen, I think, in my entire career,” Halperin said. “I hope some judge throws it out right away. It’s not just kind of funny and ridiculous, but it’s an infringement on individual liberty. He’s got a First Amendment right… it’s easy to joke about this, but this is a serious thing. It is ridiculous that he was indicted for this. Ridiculous.”
