Martha MacCallum Clashes with Eric Swalwell Over Trump Collusion Claims: ‘Are You Serious?!’
Fox News host Martha MacCallum clashed with Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) over the lawmaker’s past comments about President Donald Trump being a “Russian agent.””
“Was it not too strong a word to call the president a Russian agent?” MacCallum pressed. “That is a very strong charge and you said you would evidence to back that up. Do you stand by that?”
Swalwell accused Trump of “acting on Russia’s behalf” in various foreign policy issues, which the host also questioned.
“Is that what you really meant when you called the president a Russian agent?” she asked. “I just feel like that In light of the Mueller finding, that maybe it’s time for a little retrospective of what you said in the past.”
After Swalwell insisted on laying out additional evidence, MacCallum gave a snarky response: “Mueller laid out 2,800 subpoenas and two years of evidence, but if you got something that he didn’t find then let’s hear that.”
The two continued by going back-and-forth over the president destroying notes of his meetings with Vladimir Putin and his allies lying about their communications with Russia. MacCallum then suggested again that Swalwell “jumped over your skis a little bit” by branding Trump a foreign agent.
“I feel very strongly that no candidate for president-elect or president should conduct themselves the way Donald Trump has with Russia,” the Democratic lawmaker replied, adding that Trump’s close ties to a “foreign adversary” require him to “do everything I can to always put the United States first.”
MacCallum continued by questioning Swalwell’s reliance on the “not necessarily factual” Christopher Steele dossier for evidence against the president.
“Which part was not proved factual?” Swalwell replied, to which a stunned MacCallum replied, “I mean, are you serious?”
“A few main tenets of it, one of them was this salacious story and what happened in a hotel,” the host added, referencing the alleged “Pee Tape,” which purports to show Trump paying prostitutes to urinate on a bed in a Moscow hotel room. “None of that proved to be factual.”
The two concluded the interview by mutually calling for the release of the “full [Mueller] report as soon as possible.”
