Matt Whitaker Will Not Be Recused from Overseeing Mueller Investigation on Trump, Russia
Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker has been told by the Justice Department that he does not need to recuse himself from Robert Mueller‘s investigation into President Trump‘s relationship with Russia, according to various reports now emerging.
Despite his on-the-record criticisms of Mueller’s probe, multiple outlets report that Whitaker has been overseeing the special counsel since he was appointed to take over for ousted former AG Jeff Sessions. This development marks a change in management since Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein previously oversaw the investigation due to Sessions’ recusal from matters on Russia.
NBC’s Pete Williams reports that ethics officials reviewed by Whitaker’s Mueller criticisms, but determined that his remarks were made in the frame of a conservative commentator, and didn’t constitute grounds for his recusal.
