Former George W Bush campaign strategist Matthew Dowd predicted that President Barack Obama was “fast becoming irrelevant in Washington,” arguing on This Week With George Stephanopoulos Sunday morning that Obama is at the exact point and situation in his presidency that Bush was after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
“That point in time, it was basically the beginning of the end of President Bush’s presidency,” Dowd said, noting that the two presidents’ approval ratings and dysfunctional Congresses are analogous.
“I think the president [Obama] is a very big fan of history, he watched that go on with [Bush],” Dowd said. “Unless the president changes his trajectory, he is on the road to irrelevancy.”
Dowd said that tied in to Stephanopoulos’ previous question, “which went to the 2016 president, which is what everybody now wants to talk about, even though there’s all these big issues.”
