Matthews: Conservatives Who Support ‘Getting Rid Of The IRS’ Are ‘Insane,’ ‘Almost Traitors’
MSNBC host Chris Matthews vented his frustration at both the White House and conservative critics of the Internal Revenue Service on Wednesday. After asserting that the Obama administration had failed to correct misinformation regarding the IRS’s targeting of conservatives, Matthews turned his ire on conservatives protesting the organization. He said that those who advocate for the abolition of the IRS are “almost traitors.”
Matthews said that transcripts of testimony by an IRS official, released by Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) on Tuesday, exonerate the White House of any involvement in that scandal. Nevertheless, Matthews lamented, the impression that the administration directed the targeting of conservatives persists.
Matthews blamed the White House for failing to get in front of the IRS story. “They just really underestimated the potency of this story,” said The Hill columnist A.B. Stoddard. “Nothing excites the Republican base more than the idea that there was political targeting at the IRS.”
“First of all, the right-wing are crazy,” Matthews said. “What they’re saying about getting rid of the IRS is insane and, I think, almost traitors because the federal government has to be paid for. The government has to exist. Are they saying, ‘don’t exist? Not have a government?’”
