MSNBC Host Chris Matthews has identified another strain of racism running through Republicanism: opposition to an increase in the federal minimum wage. In an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Friday, Matthews tore into “these racists” who do not back the immediate increase in the minimum wage.
Matthews noted that the public is “all for” a minimum wage increase and “it also doesn’t cost the government a nickel.” In this way, he says, a minimum wage increase is smart policy. He adds, however, that such a policy would also be smart politics.
Host Joe Scarborough insisted that he “prayed every night” that the issue of the minimum wage never came up because it would be a major problem for Republicans who oppose it.
“If you make fun of people for being unemployed or underemployed help them make more money,” Matthews insisted. “Are they bad guys or good guys? Treat them like good guys.”
“You can’t make enemies of the all the working poor or the poor and say, ‘We don’t like the bums or the ones with fancy fingernails,’ whatever the hell they’re talking about these days, these racists,” he concluded.
