Give credit where credit is due: there was an avalanche of outrage about CNN’s decision to hire ex-Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, and CNN’s own Brian Stelter didn’t shy away from it on this morning’s Reliable Sources.
Stelter acknowledged all the criticism and looked into a report that CNN staffers are fuming over this. He concluded that there is “discomfort” within CNN about the hire, but no “revolt” brewing.
As soon as he brought his panelists on, though, Baltimore Sun media critic David Zurawik let loose. He made it clear he hates the idea of TV networks hiring political operatives in general, but Lewandowski’s on a whole different level.
He said that Lewandowski embraced McCarthyite tactics with lies and a “snarly vicious tone on the campaign trail.” Zurawik praised CNN for doing great work this election season, but was just dismayed by them wanting “to bring this snake into it.”
Fellow CNN Trump supporter Jeff Lord defended Lewandowski and pointed to people like Karl Rove and George Stephanopoulos as examples of other political operatives being hired by news networks.
Zurawik kept pushing and said that if CNN felt a “need to pay him to tell you what’s going on inside the Trump campaign, give your money back” as opposed to “paying weasels.”
