Mediaite’s Joe Concha Clashes With CNN’s LZ Granderson Over Redskins Name Change: Fans Don’t Want It

Mediaite’s Joe Concha joined CNN anchor Erin Burnett on Thursday night to talk Slate’s bold stand against calling the Washington Redskins the Washington Redskins, because of the supposed racial insensitivity of the term. Concha clashed with CNN contributor LZ Granderson and radio host Michael Medved over whether the team should change the name, touting how a majority of Redskins fans don’t want the name change, saying, “If the fans are voting right now, they’re saying, ‘Don’t touch a thing.'”

Granderson argued that people need to understand the actual origin of the name Redskins, and insisted, “I don’t see how you can be proud of that heritage in its entirety.” Medved called the term “insulting,” while Concha went on a mock-tirade against the New York Jets. “Jets cause pollution and pollution causes global warming and global warming causes hurricanes and hurricanes are killing people!”

Granderson shot back, “I can’t believe you’re marginalizing this conversation!” Concha brought up the negative history surrounding the names Vikings and Raiders, and said the modern racial history of the Redskins is more relevant than “some guy… back in the 30s and what kind of person he was.”

Granderson stood by his guns, scolding Concha for marginalizing the argument, and made it clear “it’s not about political correctness, it’s about morality.”
