On Fox News Thursday, Megyn Kelly asked State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf to defend President Barack Obama, who referenced a controversial Muslim cleric during his speech at the United Nations general assembly.
The Department of State had previously deleted and apologized for a tweet that praised Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah for condemning the kidnapping of hundreds of Nigerian girls. Bin Bayyah has, however, also called for the killing of Americans in 2004.
Despite the State Department’s walk-back, Obama commended Bayyah during his UN Speech for denouncing ISIS, the Islamic terrorist group that the U.S. is now engaged in war against.
“What we’re judging him by is what he says very openly right now about the fact that Muslims should reject ISIS’s ideology,” said Harf.
“Be honest,” Kelly replied, “that must have been embarrassing for you. They’re putting you in a very difficult position, aren’t they?”
“Not at all, Harf said.
