Michael Tomasky: Only ‘Fox Viewers’ Care Whether Benghazi Spontaneous or Terror Attack

Appearing on MSNBC with Tamron Hall on Monday, The Daily Beast columnist Michael Tomasky criticized Fox News Channel host Bill O’Reilly for spending what Tomasky called “wasted time” asking President Barack Obama about the deadly 2012 attack on an American consulate in Benghazi.

After playing a portion of the interview, Hall noted that Tomasky had written that the interview was largely about generating ratings than about getting to the bottom of the White House’s early response to that attack. He specifically criticized O’Reilly for asking Obama about former United Nations Amb. Susan Rice insisting that the attack was initially a spontaneous response to an inflammatory YouTube video.

“That’s a distinction that just doesn’t make that much difference to most people,” Tomasky said. “It’s a distinction that really makes a whole lot of difference I guess to Fox viewers and people on the right.”

“Was at terrorist attack? Was it spontaneous?” Tomasky asked. “It could have been, and apparently was, a little of both.”

He added that he was surprised the president did not cite an investigation in the New York Times which concluded that the Benghazi attack was both a spontaneous event and a terror attack.
