Michelle Obama Rebukes Hillary Clinton’s Uncivil Advice for Liberals: Fear Is Not a Proper Motivator

This week, Hillary Clinton and Eric Holder had advice for Democrats. Tapping into the increasingly visible (and acted upon) primal rage of liberals, Clinton advised being uncivil, saying the time to be civil to Republicans is after destroying them, while Holder, playing off advice from the former First Lady herself, stated: “when they go low, we kick ’em.” But in a live appearance on NBC’s Today on Thursday, Michelle Obama pushed back.

Democrats have long used the phrase “politics of fear” when criticizing Republicans, but that is how Michelle Obama essentially characterized the point of view espoused by Clinton and Holder, not to mention Rep. Maxine Waters, when she said this morning that “fear is not a proper motivator.”

NBC’s Samantha Guthrie specifically cited Clinton and Holder when she asked Obama whether she would stand by the line she delivered in her most-remembered speech, famously saying “when they go low, we go high.”

“I just thought, what would you say know about your motto,” asked Guthrie. “Do you think it still stands?”

“Absolutely,” said Obama. “Fear is not a proper motivator. Hope wins out.”

It was not a pat answer, as she went deeper into the premises underlying the new surge among liberals to embrace anger and seek retribution.

“If you think about how you want your kids to be raised, how you want them to think about life and their opportunities, do you want them afraid of their neighbors? Do you want them angry? Do you want them vengeful?” she said.

“You know if we think of the values that we try to promote to our children. Savannah, you’re a mother right now, and at this point, you have to think about what are the things you’re telling your girls. Which motto do you want them to live by?” Obama continued.

“I have to think about that as a mother,” she said. ‘As someone who is a role model to young girls, we want them to grow up with promise and hope. And we can’t model something different if we want them to be better than that.”

Former First Lady Michelle Obama wants to know what values are being handed down to America’s children by an embrace of vengeance, anger, and incivility. We will see if Hillary Clinton, Eric Holder, or any of the authors of think pieces on public harassment at Huffington Post, Slate, and other liberal publications have an answer.
