One of the first things the Fraternal Order of Police in Baltimore did after charges were announced against the six officers involved in Freddie Gray‘s death was to call on State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby to appoint an independent special prosecutor because of a conflict of interest. Specifically, the fact that William Murphy, an attorney for Gray’s family, gave her money during her campaign last year.
Mosby dismissed the accusation and pointed out the police union gave her money too.
On Morning Joe earlier today, Mika Brzezinski confronted Murphy about the conflict and repeatedly asked him if he could understand why people might find that problematic. Murphy said, “Where’s the conflict? Nobody’s pointed it out to me. I don’t see a conflict.”
He argued that Mosby’s not “impaired from doing the right thing” and didn’t understand the big deal, but Brzezinski, Willie Geist, and Joe Scarborough said it’s pretty clear to anyone that there could potentially be some conflict here.
Things even got a little testy when Murphy said “I don’t mean to befuddle everybody” and Brzezinski retorted, “You don’t need to be condescending about it.”
