Mike Barnicle: Both Sides Show a ‘Stunning Portrait of Complete Ignorance’ of Shutdown’s Impact

MSNBC contributor Mike Barnicle ripped into Democrats and Republicans on Thursday, accusing both of making the government shutdown worse while refusing to acknowledge the full extent of the damage its causing.

Barnicle was on Morning Joe to talk about the news that five former Homeland Security secretaries, including John Kelly, have signed a letter saying the shutdown must end for the sake of national security. Since the letter illustrates concerns about how long the country will remain secure during the shutdown, Barnicle said Kelly realizes “how stupid the shutdown is,” which could be easily resolved if both sides weren’t digging in their heels.

“Both sides are so frozen in their lack of movement that we have the acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, talking about what to do to prepare for an extended shutdown into March or April,” Barnicle said. “Watching this play out is just a stunning, stunning portrait of complete ignorance on both sides of what the reality of this shutdown is doing not just to the 800,000 people not getting a check for the second time, but to the country itself.”
