Miner Week Brings Big Bump For CNN; Fox News Remains Far Ahead Of Cable News Pack
We made some predictions earlier this month when it came to how the cable news networks would fare during Haitian miner rescue coverage.
In the end, Fox News remained steady in 4th place, CNN saw a bump but MSNBC did not. Here are some more details.
For the week of October 11 (rescue week), FNC finished 4th in prime time (total viewers). CNN was 24th, a big increase from the week before, MSNBC was 28th and HLN 35th. In total day for that week, FNC was 7th, CNN 15th, MSNBC 29th and HLN 39th. The prime time finish for CNN ahead of MSNBC was the first time in months it has occurred.
The next week, the ratings leveled out. In every category, Fox News, CNN and HLN declined week-to-week, as expected. The biggest decline was for CNN. MSNBC actually saw its ratings increase – showing the sustainability of the current line-up but also the lack of bump for breaking, miner rescue coverage. FNC was 4th in prime time, MSNBC was 27th, CNN moved down to 34th and HLN was 38th. In total day, FNC finished 7th, MSNBC 28th, CNN 34th and HLN 41st.
