On Wednesday, Politico’s Mike Allen stopped by Morning Joe to share a report on how the Obama re-election campaign is putting First Lady Michelle Obama front and center in an effort to appeal to both middle class voters and younger veterans.
“One of the few barriers between President Obama and voters,” Allen explained, “has been these little bits of ‘exotic,’ the Harvard thing. And she’s been helping with that as she’s been on the road. She’s talking about the ‘itty-bitty apartment,’ as she calls it, that her mom grew up in, her dad going off to the water plant at the same time he was fighting MS. So she has an authentically middle class experience that they’re now rolling out as another way to try and contrast with the Romney background.”
Allen also noted that she’s been a big part of the effort to appeal to younger veterans, particularly since those who are older are more likely, he said, to vote Republican.
