On Morning Joe on Tuesday, the hosts cautiously took the position that Donald Trump‘s Supreme Court pick Judge Brett Kavanaugh does not actually represent the end of life and liberty for America, but is instead a fairly mainstream choice.
While some have said Kavanaugh will bring death to millions, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Willie Geist had a more measured tone this morning after Trump’s big announcement Monday night.
Mika Brzezinski first goes over some of Kavanaugh’s background, and cites a New York Times editorial from Tuesday titled “A Liberal’s Case for Brett Kavanaugh” as part of the discussion. Paraphrasing the author Professor Akhil Reed Amar, Scarborough says the judge is “he’s about — he’s as good a selection as any Republican president could make.”
“This is not a wild, Judge Jeanine Pirro pick,” agreed Geist. “This is an eminently qualified guy. Again, you can disagree with his positions on certain issues, but this is a guy who is qualified for this job.’
Geist also added that it is perhaps smart on the part of the Trump administration, in that it is difficult to support end of the world claims over such a mainstream, establishment-supported pick.
Former RNC Chair Michael Steele also called Kavanaugh, a “solid pick” whose jurisprudence has been “noted 11 times by the Supreme Court.”
“This jurist, this future Supreme Court Justice,” said the optimistic Steele, “brings a lot to the table.”
“This is going to be a judicial desert for Democrats for quite some time,” he added.
