Morning Joe held a discussion on Wednesday about the connotations of President Trump‘s relationship’s with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, both of whom are known to be authoritarian to reporters.
Joe Scarborough spoke to Washington Post columnist and Jamal Khashoggi colleague David Ignatius about the connotations of the briefing CIA Director Gina Haspel gave to lawmakers yesterday. Ignatius expressed hope that the meeting would take foreign policy on Saudi Arabia in a more fact-based and values-based direction from where Trump was going.
As the panel talked about how Republicans have pushed back on Trump for how he has handled the Khashoggi situation, they raised the question of how will the U.S. approach Saudi Arabia now if Congress and the president are on two different wavelengths. Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski eventually expressed their disgust with the warm handshake Salman and Putin shared at the G20 before they both met with Trump.
“You want a snapshot of the future, it’s that high-five between Putin and MbS. Chances are the Saudis say ‘the heck with the U.S.’ Lindsey Graham can go play golf…”
“We can kill reporters,” Brzezinski interjected. “That’s what that’s about.”
