The bombshell New Yorker report out Tuesday on Harvey Weinstein’s alleged history of sexual assault detailed a 2015 sting operation by the NYPD to catch the Hollywood titan, which never led to charges.
The operation caught Weinstein on tape admitting to groping a model, but the NYPD presented the evidence to the Manhattan district attorney’s office, which determined the tape was “insufficient to prove a crime.”
In light of the New Yorker report, questions have been raised concerning Manhattan DA Cy Vance’s motivations for not prosecuting the case, particularly given recent reports he shut down an investigation into the Trump children after some curiously timed campaign contributions.
For MSNBC’s Mike Barnicle, it’s an “age old story about the issues of status, power, clout, and money in America that can separate you from consequences.”
“The New York police department had enough to go forward with a case on Harvey Weinstein: they had tape, they had motive, they had repetitive behavior,” he continued, “and somehow that got the shut down on the way to the Manhattan district attorney’s office.”
Morning Joe’s Joe Scarborough mentioned Vance’s handling of the Trump’s case, before stating “I can’t believe that in 2017 this is how justice is actually performed in Manhattan.”
“Is it really that easy, 2017, to write to a check to a DA? And you get charges dropped?” Scarborough asked. “I mean, this is out of the Simpsons, this is out of Mayor Quimby! This is a joke Mika!”
Later in the segment, Scarborough said that Vance’s face should be on the front page of the New York Times.
