Morning Joe to Ivanka Trump: If You Actually Care About Kids, Get On a Plane To The Border Right Now
On Morning Joe on Wednesday, the hosts spent a great deal of time on the topic of Ivanka Trump and her influence on the President, particularly whether she used that influence on the family separation issue, as Donald Trump has stated.
The total segment, which lasted over 15 minutes, began with host Joe Scarborough talking to the AP’s Jonathan Lemire about their article this morning covering Ivanka’s role, or lack thereof, in the latest border debate. Lemire said Ivanka’s “silence” was “striking” during the last week.
Scarborough, too, said “there’s been an awful lot of silence in times of moral crisis” on Ivanka’s part. The panel, in a lengthy back and forth, argued that she has put herself forward as the conscience and the voice for women and children, but isn’t acting on it.
They argued that this is not just a matter of being a family member but a legitimate part of the administration and an adviser.
It was toward the end, though, when they offered her advice. MSNBC’s Willie Geist said to Mika that Ivanka “should get on the plane this morning and go down to the border.”
“Do what can you do,” agreed Mika. “Everybody who cares about this is doing what they can do. There are legal aid organizations doing what they can do. There are doctors stepping up.”
“We want to foster one of these children,” Mika continued, referring to herself and Joe. “wherever they are. We just want to know where they are.”
“What can you do? You can go to the border, as the President’s counselor on women and families and children, and you can stand there and wait until something is done, step up. It’s not about you, and it’s not about your dad. It’s about the country. Do what’s right,” Mika concluded.
