On the same night that the continuation of Bill O’Reilly’s pre-Super Bowl interview with President Barack Obama brought in over 4 million viewers, MSNBC also managed to score a major ratings victory over Fox News. Aside from The O’Reilly Factor, which was #1 overall in both the 25-54 demo and total viewers, the three other shows on MSNBC’s prime time lineup beat their Fox competition in the demo.
At 7pm, Hardball with Chris Matthews had 391K viewers in the demo, beating Greta van Susteren’s 360K. With 472K, Rachel Maddow had 100K more viewers in the demo than Megyn Kelly’s 372K at 9pm. And at 10pm, Lawrence O’Donnell beat Sean Hannity 333K to 251K.
Monday night saw sustained coverage from Matthews, Maddow and O’Donnell of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s “Bridgegate” scandal. Based on these impressive ratings, a story that clearly resonated with the network’s progressive audience. As is typically the case, Fox won across the board in total viewers, but MSNBC’s success in the demo was surprising, especially considering the phenomenal lead-in Kelly and Hannity had from O’Reilly’s Obama interview.
