MSNBC Contributor: Trump’s Performance Will ‘Live in Infamy’ as Much as Pearl Harbor or Kristallnacht
On Monday night, MSNBC contributor and former Watergate prosecutor Jill Wine-Banks blasted President Donald Trump for his performance at the Helsinki summit alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Filling in for Chris Hayes, Ali Velshi read an excerpt from a Washington Post report about how the president was “growling” according to one White House official in reaction to Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s indictment of 12 Russian intel officials just days before the highly anticipated summit and that he was “more excited” to sit down with Putin than he was with NATO allies, something Velshi thought was “amazing.”
“At some point, this has a complexity that’s even richer than the one you were involved in with the watergate investigation in that nobody thought that Richard Nixon was working on behalf of an enemy of the United States,” Velshi said to Wine-Banks. “How do you even make sense of this?
In response, Wine-Banks invoked one of the deadliest attacks on Americans and the Holocaust to compare the severity of Trump’s summit performance.
“You can’t make sense of it. It’s very hard to possibly analyze. And you’re quite correct. The burglars were Americans. They worked for the White House. They worked for the committee to re-elect the president. They weren’t foreign agents. And yet, we were burglarized this time by foreign agents,” she said. “And it’s just as serious to me as the Cuban Missile Crisis in terms of an attack or the 9/11 attack. The president is taking the side of the people who attacked us instead of trying to prevent a future attack. He has done nothing to make sure that the elections four months away are going to be safe.”
With the Cuban Missile Crisis and September 11th already on the table, she wrapped up the over-the-top comparisons.
“I would say that his performance today will live in infamy as much as the Pearl Harbor attack or Kristallnacht. And it’s really a serious issue we need to deal with.”
Yes, she said Kristallnacht.
