On Monday, MSNBC surprisingly touted Saturday Night Live alumnus Joe Piscopo as a possible independent candidate for governor of New Jersey.
Anchor Stephanie Ruhle dedicated a significant portion of the Piscopo segment to clips from his SNL career. She led the feature by wondering, “Was President Trump a celebrity politician, an anomaly, or the first of many?”
Ruhle asked “Jersey Joe” Piscopo if he was running. The comedian replied, “If I run, it will be for governor of New Jersey — not against and/or for Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump or any of the Republicans or any of the Democrats — because in Jersey, man, we get no respect. We’re like the Rodney Dangerfield of states.”
The MSNBC journalist noted, “If he decides to run, Piscopo would be inevitably judged as a test case of whether Trump-style populism is the secret to getting celebrity politicians into the office.”
Ruhle soon added, “There may be no better time than now” for the TV star turned conservative radio host to run for office, as “Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders have proven there’s an appetite for outsiders.”
