During an interview with MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall on Wednesday, Stop Handgun Violence founder and chairman John Rosenthal praised the steps taken by President Barack Obama to halt future episodes of gun violence. He said, however, that there was more work to do. In particular, Rosenthal claimed that terrorist groups like Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, and the Irish Republican Army take advantage of the gun show loophole in the United States to bypass background checks and obtain firearms.
“The founders never intended the Second Amendment to extend to the mentally ill, criminals, and even Al Qaeda, Hezbollah and IRA terrorists who come to the United States to 33 states and thousands of annual gun shows where they can legally buy military-style weapons easier in our country than theirs without an ID or background check,” Rosenthal said.
He went on to say that he was sad that the 20 children who died in Newtown, Connecticut, were being used as a “political football.” He said that, while he supports Obama’s executive orders, there is little chance that those orders can be codified into law given the makeup of the present Congress.
“On the gun issue, it’s our Democracy that’s dying,” Rosenthal said.
