Happily taking a breather from the massively serious week since the shootings in Tucson, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow spent a few minutes Thursday exploring the astrological mess that is “the 13th Sign of the Zodiac, Ophiuchus.” Displaying massive nerd gravitas, Maddow dived into the whole you-aren’t-the-sign-you’ve-always-thought-you-were-every-horoscope-you-ever-read-was-for-somebody-else situtation. Bottom line: the MSNBC host is not cool with being a Pisces.
The segment, as Laughingsquid points out, covers a lot of ground: the Earth’s core, magnetic fields, Tampa’s airport, the Moon’s gravity, and other stuff that, honestly, is beyond the patience of your humble reporter, like this:
The Astrological Lore of Ophiuchus: Ophiuchus was better known in classical times as Asclepius, [in Latin, Aesculapius] the God of Medicine. He learnt the art from Chiron, the Centaur. On either side of Ophiuchus in the heavens lie the two parts of the sign of the serpent he holds, Serpens Caput, the Serpent’s Head and Serpens Cauda, the Serpent’s Tail. The twined serpent staff is the badge of the medical profession to this day. [However, the sign of the serpent itself does not form part of the Real Solar Zodiac, though it does [form] part of the Planetary Zodiac.] It is from the Serpent that Ophiuchus learnt the secret of the Elixir of Life.
But in Maddow’s hands, it’s, well, more entertaining. Have a look here, from MSNBC:
