MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle Scolds GOP During McCain Memorial: They Chose Trumpism Over Senator’s Way
Conservative commentator Charlie Sykes joined Stephanie Ruhle on Friday for MSNBC’s coverage of John McCain‘s memorial service at the U.S. Capitol, and they spoke about the Republican Party departing from the values the senator stood for.
The conversation began with a reflection on McCain’s life and what the political connotations will be from his departure. This segued into a discussion about how McCain was respected by many of his Senate colleagues, on the right and left.
Eventually, Ruhle asked Sykes if there’s any hope left for bipartisanship of the kind McCain encouraged. Sykes was pessimistic about that idea, saying its only a matter of time before Donald Trump tweets something outrageous again, and Ruhle agreed that most of the GOP seems to have chosen the president’s path over that of McCain.
“The truth is, the Republican Party has gone the way of Trumpism more than they have John McCain in the last years.”
Sykes remarked on how GOP leaders gave speeches in Congress today in McCain’s honor, even though many of them have embraced roles in American politics that are the antithesis of what the senator stood for.
