Mulvaney on 2018 vs 2013 Shutdowns: Obama Wanted to ‘Weaponize’ Shutdown

OMB Director Mick Mulvaney appeared on a number of Sunday shows today to talk about the shutdown, and on Fox News Sunday, he addressed it in the context of what happened during the last shutdown.

Chris Wallace first asked Mulvaney for a breakdown of the shutdown’s effects before asking, “Even if there hadn’t been a Democratic filibuster, you didn’t have the majority needed to pass the CR. All the more reason, isn’t this on Republicans and the White House and control of the House and the Senate?”

He told Mulvaney, “You do not have your own house in order.”

Mulvaney blamed the Democrats for engaging in “pure politics” while reiterating that they didn’t get enough votes from them to pass a deal.

Wallace brought up how Trump blamed the 2013 shutdown on Barack Obama and asked if the same rule applies on blame this time.

Mulvaney said, “President Obama wanted that shutdown. And he wanted to weaponize it. He wanted to use it politically to hurt Republicans because he thought Republicans would get blamed politically… This president has worked really, really hard to prevent the shutdown.”
