During an interview with CNN’s New Day Wednesday, Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi made a bizarre claim, saying that she had seen Iran from the island nation of Bahrain across the Persian Gulf.
Pelosi was showing off her foreign policy credentials during an interview about the ten U.S. soldiers captured by Iran. “I’ve been to the region,” Pelosi said. “I’ve been to Bahrain & looked right across the Persian Gulf to Iran. Everything is very close there.”
Well, it’s not that close. According to Google Maps, the distance between the two countries at their closest points is over 100 miles. That’s roughly equivalent to the distance between Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia.
Pelosi doesn’t just have good eyes. Even a tall person can only see a few miles away due to the curvature of the Earth¹. It appears Pelosi is capable of seeing through the Earth itself.
The moment is reminiscent of Sarah Palin‘s famous argument during the 2008 election that she had some experience with foreign policy because you can see Russia from parts of her home state of Alaska. Logical flaws aside, at least Palin was right; you can see Russia from Alaska.
¹In fairness to Pelosi, she could have seen Iran from Bahrain if she were floating two miles above sea level
