NARAL President Demands ‘Affirmative Declaration’ SCOTUS Nominee Will Uphold Roe v. Wade
Just one day ahead of the announcement of President Donald Trump‘s Supreme Court nominee, the head of a major pro-life organization demanded an assurance that the pick would uphold Roe v. Wade.
In an interview on Fox News Sunday, National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws President Ilyse Hogue told Dana Perino she wanted a guarantee that abortion rights would remain, expressing grave concerns the landmark case’s ruling would be flipped.
“We take the president at his word…he is certainly the first major party nominee who went on to be president to put a litmus test on Supreme Court justices and that was to actually overturn Roe v. Wade, so we believe him,” Hogue said. “He’s got a vice president who committed to throw Roe on the ash heap of history.”
While the country remains divided on the morality of abortion, most Americans can agree that legal access to the procedure is crucial, Hogue explained, her statement being backed by Pew research on public opinion.
Hogue added that it was because of Trump’s decision to impose a litmus test on a nominee for Supreme Court, which he did upon selecting pro-lifer Neil Gorsuch in 2017, “we need an affirmative declaration” that Roe is here to stay.
She also noted that Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) has echoed that same desire for a guarantee.
