A retired Navy SEAL Team 6 member who was involved in the killing of Osama bin Laden told 60 Minutes that his new tell-all book about the raid — written under the pseudonym “Mark Owen” — is not meant as a political statement, but rather as a commemoration of the 9/11 attacks and a celebration of the hundreds of people who worked towards the killing mission.
Wearing heavy disguise makeup and with his voice altered, “Owen” told Scott Pelley that he worried that some would see the book as politically-timed, but he said, “This book is not political whatsoever. It doesn’t bad-mouth either party, and we specifically chose September 11th to keep it out of the politics. You know, if these– crazies on either side of the aisle want to make it political, shame on them.”
“This is a book about September 11th, and it needs to rest on September 11th,” he continued. “Not be brought into the political arena, because this has nothing to do with politics.”
“Owen” also described to Pelley the details of the SEAL team’s rehearsals for the raid, which included visits from top military brass like Admiral Mike Mullen, then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
