A new report from The New Yorker‘s Daily Intelligencer blog says NBC courted a surprising face for Meet the Press: Jon Stewart. Yes. That Jon Stewart.
Several anonymous sources relayed that NBC News President Deborah Turness reached out to Stewart, a late night comedian who’s appeared in movies like Death to Smoochy and Half-Baked, to host the vaunted Sunday news program. Apparently, they were “prepared to offer Stewart virtually ‘anything’ to bring him over.”
Stewart, while a comedian, does have a reputation for conducting some tough interviews of political and government figures (including his infamously tough interview with Kathleen Sebelius).
Neither NBC nor Stewart have commented on the news yet. We will update this post if and when we hear back.
Update- 5:13 pm: Current Meet the Press host Chuck Todd coyly tweeted about the report:
If it's Sunday, it's your moment of zen.
