NBC Reporter: White House Uncomfortable with Sebelius’ ‘Rocky’ Daily Show Appearance

While the White House has made it clear that it was Health and Human Services Sec. Kathleen Sebelius‘ decision to resign this week, NBC News reporter Kristen Welker revealed on Friday that the administration wanted to move on to a new head of HHS who was not “battered and bruised.” She added that her sources tell her the White House was concerned with Sebelius’ “rocky” October, 2013 performance on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show.

“The White House trying to make it very clear that this was Secretary Sebelius’ idea to resign,” Welker reported. “Having said that, one senior administration official tells me that there was broad agreement, that it was time to move on with a new head of HHS who wasn’t battered and bruised.”

“This administration, in addition to the fact that feeling frustrated that the roll-out of the health care website was bungled, didn’t exactly feel comfortable with the way that she handled some of her public appearances afterward,” she continued. “Particularly, her appearance on The Daily Show. You’ll recall, that was quite rocky.”

Welker noted that, after that Comedy Central appearance, “we didn’t really hear a whole lot from Secretary Sebelius.
