Arsenio Hall is one of the most enduring names in late night history, and so he was more than a little P.O.ed that his name was excluded in an NBC report on the late night wars and Jimmy Fallon‘s ascendancy. Hall called out Brian Williams for his exclusion, and Williams apologized on the air tonight for the oversight.
One key objection of Hall’s was the following graphic showing nine of the big names in late night that he wasn’t included in.
In case you need a guide, those nine people are (starting at the top-left): Conan O’Brien, Chelsea Handler, Craig Ferguson, Jon Stewart, Andy Cohen, Stephen Colbert, David Letterman, Carson Daly, and Jimmy Kimmel. And Hall just figured, well, there’s at least one face there that could afford to be dropped in favor of his own.
Williams noted tonight he left out both Hall and Pete Holmes, who hosts the late night show following O’Brien’s, and pointed out the call-in campaign that Hall encouraged his viewers to get involved in.
But to make Hall feel slightly better, Williams’ apology was tempered by the acknowledgement this wasn’t the only time this week the newscast screwed up. Last night an on-screen graphic referred to the city of “Philadelpia.”
