On Meet the Press Sunday morning, host David Gregory challenged Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) to defend the remarks of Ben Carson, a conservative speaker who recently called Obamacare “the worst thing to happen to this nation since slavery.”
Noting that Carlson took second place in the Values Voter Summit straw poll yesterday, Gregory asked, “Is that an overstatement that’s counterproductive?”
“Well, he’s a doctor who feels passionately about this issue, obviously, he can speak for himself,” Portman replied.
Gregory pressed the senator. “Is that something that, as a senior Republican, is helpful to the debate about Obamacare?”
“I think what would be helpful is if we sat down and figured out how to make this less damaging to American families and the American economy, because it is a huge problem,” Portman demurred, before going on to detail the glitches of the Obamacare websites.
