NBC’s Hallie Jackson Presses Sanders on Rick Gates Plea: Three ‘Criminals’ Linked to Campaign
Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders finally addressed Friday’s guilty plea by Paul Manafort’s right hand man, Rick Gates.
The response, or relative lack thereof, came after a question from MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson, who inquired about President Donald Trump’s one-time boast that he would only hire “the best people.”
“Given the guilty plea by Rick Gates on Friday, I’m wondering what it says, in your view, about the president’s judgment that three people linked to his campaign have now turned out to be criminals?” She asked.
Sanders was ready with a fairly rote response, noting that she would not be commenting any further on the matter, as the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller is still ongoing.
“Those are issues that took place long before they were involved with the president,” she said. “Because those are active investigations I’m not going to go any further than that.”
Sanders went on to say that “The actions that are under review and under investigation took place prior to being part of the president’s campaign.”
While Gates seems to have cut something of a deal with investigators, Manafort remains defiant, saying “This does not alter my commitment to defend myself against the untrue piled up charges contained in the indictments against me.”
