NBC’s Savannah Guthrie Grills Paul Ryan on Tax Bill: ‘Are You Living In a Fantasy World?’

Paul Ryan appeared on NBC’s TODAY show on Wednesday, where he ended up facing some pointed questions from Savannah Guthrie.

The House Speaker made the rounds on the morning news shows to talk about the Congressional GOP’s legislative victory on tax reform. Ryan spoke to Guthrie about how the bill will supposedly slash corporate tax rates, increase competition and stimulate the economy, though Guthrie had questions about Ryan’s argument in terms of business leaders who have said that tax cuts won’t necessarily make them reinvest in the country.

As an example, Guthrie pointed to some recent comments from business magnate Michael Bloomberg.

“CEOs aren’t waiting on a tax cut to “jump-start the economy” — a favorite phrase of politicians who have never run a company — or to hand out raises. It’s pure fantasy to think that the tax bill will lead to significantly higher wages and growth, as Republicans have promised. Had Congress actually listened to executives, or economists who study these issues carefully, it might have realized that.”

From there, Guthrie asked Ryan, “Are you living in a fantasy world?”

Ryan insisted that surveys indicate that most business chiefs will reinvest in their workers, which will lead to higher wages.
