Shortly after Hamas announced a twenty-four hour ceasefire Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told State of the Union’s Candy Crowley that it had violated its own ceasefire, continuing to fire rockets after it was supposed to have stopped.
“Hamas doesn’t even accept its own ceasefire,” Netanyahu said. “It’s continued to fire at us as we speak. Israel accepted five ceasefires since this conflict began. Five. We accepted and implemented them, including two humanitarian ceasefires, which Hamas rejected, as they rejected the other ceasefires. So you say Israel resumed its offense. No, we didn’t resume our offensive. We had a cease-fire, they violated it. Now, they are violating their own ceasefire.”
“Hamas is simply continuing all its operations,” Netanyahu continued. “Israel will not let this terror operation decide when it’s convenient for them and not convenient for them to attack our people, when it’s convenient to stock and reload and when it’s not.”
Israel had accepted a twenty-four hour ceasefire Saturday following a twelve-hour truce, but resumed (or not) its ground offensive Sunday morning due to what it called incessant rocket fire from Hamas. Over 1,000 Palestinians have died since the hostilities started, and forty-three Israeli soldiers.
