The cold open this week wasn’t political! How weird! What kind of earth-shattering event could have spared us from yet another GOP candidate sketch? The answer, it turns out, is a little phenomenon know as “Linsanity.” This sketch, which featured Bill Hader, Kenan Thompson, Taran Killam and the little-seen Jay Pharoah, parodied “New York Sports Now” and asked some tough questions about the racial element in the media’s coverage of Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin. Mostly, though, the sketch was an opportunity to make a lot of puns using Lin’s name.” “Lin-cidences.” “I’m Lin love.” An interview with Lin dubbed to sound like the dialogue in a vintage kung fu film. You get the idea.
I love a good pun as much as the next girl, but this dragged for me (especially because all the best puns have already been made on Twitter). The sketch really sparkled when Kenan Thompson and Jay Pharoah became righteously angry at even a hint of racial stereotyping of African Americans, but had no qualms with their own “Lin-sensitive” jokes.
