Newt Gingrich Says Trump Should Stop Blasting Mueller on Twitter: ‘Focus on Being President’
Former House speaker Newt Gingrich thinks that President Trump shouldn’t keep slamming Robert Mueller because it only distracts from his administration.
Trump spent his last few days rage-tweeting about the Mueller investigation, though several GOP lawmakers have spoken against this and said that firing the special counsel would have dire consequences for the presidency. As for Gingrich, he thinks Trump shouldn’t bother tweeting about Mueller because the special counsel is beneath his concern.
“The president ought to just drop this whole line of worrying about Mueller,” Gingrich said. “Focus on being president. Mueller is going to be taken care of Mueller because Mueller, in the end, is, I think, not going to have anything substantive about the president.”
Gingrich went on to say that Mueller will end up “looking pretty silly” for scrutinizing Paul Manafort and other Trump aides for actions that don’t directly correlate to the 2016 election.
“I think the president ought to quit doing this stuff. Focus on you tweeting about things that move his presidency forward, and just every time he starts to think about Mueller, quit thinking about him and go back to the presidency.
The conversation moved on with Gingrich slamming John Brennan for the ex-CIA director’s “nasty and mean-spirited” tweet against Trump over the administration’s firing of Andrew McCabe. Martha MacCallum wondered whether Brennan’s remarks reflect the reason why Trump tweets aggressively at his enemies and political threats.
“My only advice as a matter of being competent is, it doesn’t further him to highlight a Trump vs. Mueller fight, it furthers him to highlight the Trump Administration, what Trump is accomplishing and shrink Mueller to what he is. Mueller is a very small figure compared to the President of the United States.”
