Newt Gingrich To Mitt Romney: ‘Can We Drop A Little Bit Of The Pious Baloney?’

Sunday morning’s NBC News/Facebook Debate featured a few somewhat-heated moments of candidates going after Mitt Romney for his past politicking, including a Rick SantorumNewt Gingrich inadvertent tag-team on the “front-runner.”

After Santorum first knocked Romney for his past politics, Romney responded by saying he didn’t have designs on becoming a career politician, and considered himself a businessman first and foremost, only entering races when he feels he can do something for his country. Gingrich then jumped in, first chiding Romney for ignoring the debate’s red “wrap it up” light constantly, “because you’re the front-runner,” then for shrouding his past losses by saying he simply wants to do what’s best for the country:

“Can we drop a little bit of the pious baloney? The fact is you ran in ’94 and lost, that’s why you weren’t serving in the Senate with Rick Santorum. The fact is you had a very bad re-election rating, you dropped out of office, you had been out of state for something like 200 days, preparing to run for President… You’ve been running consistently for years and years and years, so this idea that suddenly citizenship showed up in your mind — just level with the American people! You’ve been running at least since the 1990s.”
