President Donald Trump‘s decision to break away from his party and strike a deal with Democrats on the debt limit and Hurricane Harvey relief seemed to shock many in Washington and beyond — including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. But don’t count Nicolle Wallace among those who are surprised.

The Deadline: White House host said on Wednesday that the only surprise was how long it took for a President whom Wallace deems to have no deeply held beliefs to turn on the GOP.

“How does Washington deal with a president who is basically without ideology?” Wallace said. “I guess this is why the development in the deal with the Democrats today doesn’t surprise me very much. If anything I’m surprised that it took so long…he’s tried every other way of sticking his finger in the eye of the Republicans.”

Wallace added that that Twitter shots at McConnell, Jeff Sessions, and others in his party served as the prelude for Trump deserting the GOP on this issue.

“Today seems the culmination of all the cyberbullying and all the taunting,” she said.
