No, Netflix Did Not Cancel Orange Is the New Black

On Thursday, Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black scored 12 Emmy Award nominations, including one for Outstanding Comedy Series and five acting awards for women on the show. Netflix’s most-watched original program helped the streaming site get a total of 31 nominations, more than twice what it received last year. But now, some people on the internet seem to think the show has been canceled.

It’s all thanks to an article from the satirical site Empire News, that used the click-baity headline, “Netflix Pulls Plug On Orange Is The New Black; The Reason Why May Shock You” to successfully freak out a good number of the show’s fans on Facebook and Twitter.

“We regret to inform Netflix members that Orange is the New Black has been permenantly cancelled. Also, starting September 1st, 2014, past episodes will no longer be available for streaming on Netflix.” CEO Reed Hastings says in the fake press release. Empire News reports that Hastings was in feud with series creator Jenji Kohan over adding more male leads to the female-centric show.

According to the story, Hastings told reporters, “A woman’s place is in the home, in the kitchen, taking care of children. A woman in jail? How does anyone even watch this show in the first place? It’s like we took everything bad about OZ, and make this show with the leftovers.”

All pretty hilarious, right? Well not to the people who are sharing the story on Twitter as if it were real, or hearing the “news” third-hand and taking it as fact. While it’s possible that some of these people are playing along to be in on the joke, the anger seems very real for many. More than a few people are considering suicide.

But the top Facebook comment on the article takes aim at the fans, especially young women, who so easily fell for the story without realizing it was a joke. Michelle Huebert writes:

Seriously, it sickens me to read all the posts from the angry women on here. First of all, check your facts. Second of all, try using proper grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. Your unintelligent rants only make the rest of us look like idiots too. Maybe you all do belong in the kitchen…oh wait, that requires you to be literate too…guess there’s no place for you anywhere. Sit down, shit up, and calm down. Open a dictionary and look up the term “satire” it may enlighten you…then again, you still might not understand. You’re the reason they post satirical articles such as these: so they can read your dumbass comments and wonder how you’ve made it this far in life, while they laugh their asses off. Way to go feminists, making women look moronic, one comment at a time!!

At least Netflix now has definitive proof just how much people love this show.

Update — 4:15 P.m. ET:: Kate Mulgrew was the first member of the show’s cast to dispel the rumors and put fans at ease, posting this note on Facebook Saturday afternoon:
