One of the weighty issues President Obama addressed during his big end-of-year presser (what, no party favors?) Friday was the Lie of the Year honor bestowed upon him by Politifact, in a question posed by New York Times reporter Jackie Calmes. Calmes asked the president for his reaction to the honor, and tried to fit in a few more questions before Obama jumped in.
He said, “Jackie, I gotta say you’re stringing a bunch of things along here, let’s see if we can hone in on a question.”
Calmes quickly responded, “That’s a lot less than Ed Henry gets,” eliciting a chorus of “ooh”s and murmuring from the assorted journalists.
Obama did not directly address the “lie” branding of his “if you like your plan you can keep your plan” statement, but maintained that his intentions have been noble from the beginning.
“We’re gonna make mistakes, and we’re gonna have problems, but my intentions have been clear throughout, which is I just want to help as many people as possible feel secure and make sure they don’t get broke when they get sick.”
