The New York Police Department held a press conference earlier this afternoon to address the hatchet-wielding attacker who ran at four cops and injured two yesterday. They’ve identified him as 32-year-old black male Zale Thompson. NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said the officer struck in the head by Thompson, Kenneth Healey, is still in the hospital, in critical but stable condition.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce provided several details about Thompson that they’ve already learned. He had six prior arrests in California, and the only contact between him and the NYPD they could find thus far was back in 1998 when he was the victim of assault. They found a weaponized ax and large hunting knife in his residence, and discovered anti-government postings on his social media accounts.
They learned from his family he was a bit of a recluse and converted to Islam two years ago (hence the media concerns that this may have been inspired by radical Islam). Thompson was also involuntarily discharged from the military for misconduct.
