President Obama held a press conference this morning about Iraq, and took questions from assembled reporters. He received questions about a timetable on the airstrikes, the United States’ previous foreign wars with “uncertain outcomes,” and whether he and the White House “underestimated the power of ISIS.”
It’s been a question on reporters’ minds this week, with some bringing up a quote in which Obama appeared to be comparing ISIS and similar groups to a junior varsity team wearing Lakers uniforms. CNN’s Jake Tapper grilled Deputy National Security Advisor Tony Blinken yesterday along the same line of questioning.
Obama acknowledged today that the United States “should have learned a lesson from our long and very costly incursion in Iraq.” As for whether the U.S. underestimated ISIS, the president said the terrorist group’s movement “has been more rapid than the intelligence estimates and I think the expectations of policymakers in and outside of Iraq.”
