Obama Heralds SNL as ‘Still a Challenge to the Powerful’ While Honoring Lorne Michaels

obama-lorneDuring today’s Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony, President Obama praised the continued cultural relevance of Saturday Night Live as he talked about one of the honorees, Lorne Michaels.

The president gave some shoutouts to iconic SNL sketches and even made reference to one of the other honorees in the room, Tom Hanks, playing a white guy on Black Jeopardy.

“After four decades, even in this fractured media culture that we’ve got,” Obama said, “SNL remains appointment viewing, a mainline into not just our counterculture, but our culture. Still a challenge to the powerful, especially folks like me.”
