While hosting the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks at the White House on Monday, President Obama joked that jabbing Congress with a hockey stick during last month’s government shutdown could have broken the gridlock.
When the hockey team’s owner Rocky Wirtz remarked that the Blackhawks are “not only gifted athletes,” but would be capable of ending gridlock, “if you allowed them into Congress.”
The president gave out a hearty chuckle and then joked before the crowd: “That’s true. I should try a hockey stick during the shutdown,” he said before mimicking a jab with an invisible stick. “Seen how that worked.”
