President Obama kicked off American Idol‘s series finale in a video message to celebrate the show’s legacy and encourage more people to register to vote.
Idol is coming to a close tonight after 15 seasons, and the president thanked the hit show for teaching America “what it means to be pitchy.”
He quickly pivoted to praising how easily the show got millions and millions of people to vote year after year. Obama proceeded to make this pitch:
“We should do the same in our lives as citizens of this country that we love. Voting is the most fundamental and sacred right of our democracy. I believe it should be almost as easy as voting on American Idol, and we’re working on that.”
“Not all of us can sing like Kelly Clarkson,” the president said, “but all of our voices matter.” He encouraged everyone to go register to vote as soon as they possible.
