In the Oval Office, President Barack Obama addressed the terrorist attacks that killed 12 people in Paris on Wednesday morning. He emphasized that France is one of the U.S.’s oldest and strongest allies, and pledged U.S. support for counterterrorism efforts going forward. He called the attacks “cowardly,” “evil,” and “senseless,” and said the fact that it was an attack on journalists means it was an attack on freedom of the press as well.
The belief in freedom of expression, Obama said, cannot and should not be “silenced” by the attacks.
